Intercomparison of four algorithms for detecting tropical cyclones using ERA5

چکیده

Abstract. The assessment of tropical cyclone (TC) statistics requires the direct, objective, and automatic detection tracking TCs in reanalyses model simulations. Research groups have independently developed numerous algorithms during recent decades order to answer that need. Today, there is a large number trackers aim detect positions gridded datasets. questions we ask here are following: does choice tracker impact climatology obtained? And, if it does, how should deal with this issue? This paper compares four very different formulations detail. We assess their performances by ERA5 reanalysis comparing outcome IBTrACS observations database. find typical rates around 80 %. At same time, false alarm (FARs) greatly vary across can sometimes exceed genuine cyclones detected. Based on finding many these alarms (FAs) extra-tropical (ETCs), adapt two existing filtering methods common all trackers. Both post-treatments dramatically FARs, which range from 9 % 36 our final catalogs TC tracks. then show traditional metrics be sensitive particular tracker, particularly true for frequencies durations. By contrast, identify robust negative bias intensities, result already noted previous studies. conclude advising against using as possible averaging results. A more efficient approach would involve selecting one or few well-known complementary properties.

Clouds in Tropical Cyclones

Clouds within the inner regions of tropical cyclones are unlike those anywhere else in the atmosphere. Convective clouds contributing to cyclogenesis have rotational and deep intense updrafts but tend to have relatively weak downdrafts. Within the eyes of mature tropical cyclones, stratus clouds top a boundary layer capped by subsidence. An outward-sloping eyewall cloud is controlled by adjustm...

The Dynamics of Tropical Cyclones

The specific objectives of the current effort are: 1. To continue our study of the dynamical processes in tropical cyclones responsible for looping or erratic motion; 2. To continue the development of methods for (a) the introduction of synthetic tropical-cyclone-scale vortices in operational forecast models and (b) ensemble forecasting of tropical cyclones; 3. To continue a sensitivity study o...

Targeted Observation of Tropical Cyclones

The advance in targeted observations of tropical cyclone movement is reviewed in this article. The targeted observations from DOTSTAR (Dropwindsonde Observations for Typhoon Surveillance near the Taiwan Region) in understanding and improving the tropical cyclone track predictability is highlighted, along with the progress of the field program of THORPEX-PARC in the summer of 2008. The impact of...

Helical organization of tropical cyclones

In this work we consider a helical flow organization on small and large space scales in a forming tropical cyclone and offer a quantitative analysis for early stages in evolution of large-scale helical vortex based on diagnosis of a set of integral helical and energetic characteristics. Using the data from a near cloud-resolving numerical simulation by Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS...

QuikSCAT wind retrievals for tropical cyclones

The use of QuikSCAT data for wind retrievals of tropical cyclones is described. The evidence of QuikSCAT 0 dependence on wind direction for 30-m/s wind speeds is presented. The QuikSCAT 0 show a peak-to-peak wind direction modulation of 1 dB at 35-m/s wind speed, and the amplitude of modulation decreases with increasing wind speed. The decreasing directional sensitivity to wind speed agrees wel...
